Barangay Lawaan

The barangay name was derived from the story that; One day, a group of Spanish colonizers passed by an old man in a forested area. One of them approached this man and inquired about the name of the place and the old man answered “Lawaan”. The old man was thinking that the Spaniards were asking for the name of the big trees in the forest. That was the time when Lawaan trees occupied the largest area of the forest. From then on, the barangay has been called Lawaan.

Lawaan is a rural barangay, and one of the upland barangays in the municipality of Dumarao, province of Capiz. It has a total land area of 7.9798 square kilometers. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 1,999. This represented 4.04% of the total population of Dumarao.

The barangay has an agricultural area of 494.75 hectares, 62.00% of its total land area. Agricultural produce are palay, corn, sugarcane, coconut and banana. Part of their agricultural diversification activities are livestock and backyard native chicken farming.

Geo- physical Hazards

Lawaan is exposed to 2 types of hazards: rain-induced flooding with low susceptibility levels and rain-induced landslides with 2 susceptibility levels: moderate and low.

Susceptible to low-level flooding is 119.14 hectares or 14.93% of the total barangay land area.

An area of 176.57 hectares or 22.13% of the total land area has a moderate susceptibility level for rain-induced landslide. Low susceptible have an area of 621.41 hectares or 77.87%.

Demographics

Household

The household population of Lawaan in the 2020 Census was 1,999 broken down into 504 households or an average of 3.97 members per household.

Population by age group

According to the 2020 Census, the age group with the highest population in Lawaan is 10 to 14, with 199 individuals. On the other hand, the age group with the lowest population is 75 to 79, with 30 individuals.

Combining age groups, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the young dependent population which includes infants/babies, children, and young adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate of 28.11% (562). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and actual or potential members of the workforce, constitute a total of 63.78% (1,275). Finally, the old dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and over, total 8.10% (162) in all.

Historical population

The population of Lawaan grew from 1,641 in 1990 to 1,999 in 2020, an increase of 358 people over the course of 30 years. The latest census figures in 2020 denote a positive growth rate of 2.29%, or an increase of 204 people, from the previous population of 1,795 in 2015.
